The U.S. Department of Education recently announced that colleges and universities will not begin receiving students’ financial aid information from the FAFSA until mid-March of this year. This will in turn delay when students and their families may begin receiving financial aid offers from their universities of choice.

“While over one-third of our fall 2024 class has already committed to Whitworth, we recognize many students and their families will need more time due to the delays of the FAFSA update,” says Josh Hibbard, vice president for enrollment management. “By extending the Decision Day deadline, we’re providing them with greater opportunity to review their full financial aid offers before making a decision to join Whitworth’s mind-and-heart community.”

In December 2020, Congress passed the FASFA Simplification Act, which significantly overhauls the process and systems used to award federal student aid. This includes the FASFA form, the need analysis that determines aid eligibility, changes to terminology, and many policies and procedures for schools, like Whitworth, that participate in federal student aid programs.

Hibbard says the university will continue to monitor the evolving situation and provide flexibility as needed while balancing the university’s commitment to first-year student success.

Families seeking more information on the timeline can visit Whitworth’s admissions and financial aid webpage, which provides additional details about confirming enrollment at the university, key deadlines and information about accessing financial aid.

About Whitworth University:

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. He came to Whitworth from Muskingum College in Ohio after President Robert Mounce announced his retirement in 1987.

Known for his administrative success at Muskingum, De Jong immediately went to work on fundraising and securing Whitworth’s financial stability. There had been a demographic decline in the college-age population during that time, and a looming recession began to take its toll on colleges and universities across the nation. Whitworth was no exception. In his second year at Whitworth, De Jong faced the difficult task of making substantial cuts to balance the budget.

De Jong is perhaps best remembered for institutionalizing long-range planning as Whitworth attempted to preserve the strengths of its past and look forward with a clear purpose and vision.

In 1991, De Jong suggested Whitworth should move toward university status and proposed the establishment of schools of Fine Arts and International Studies, along with the existing School of Education. It was his desire to “build bridges to the community,” and he pushed for Whitworth to be involved with the Spokane Intercollegiate Research and Technical Institute (SIRTI), a consortium of higher-education institutions in Spokane.

“There are a number of things for which we should honor President Art De Jong,” Whitworth President Scott McQuilkin says. “He deeply encouraged our faculty to take seriously the integration of Christian faith and learning. His talent for recruiting exceptional people to the board of trustees, some of whom served and contributed for decades, is still being felt today, and he worked tirelessly to establish Whitworth’s place in higher education here in the Inland Northwest. Although his tenure at Whitworth was relatively short, his impact remains to this day.”

De Jong was 89 years old. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce. He is survived by his second wife, Alida Grady, five children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

De Jong loved nature and was known for his admiration of all the trees at Whitworth. To leave messages for his family or plant a tree in his honor, please find his obituary here. Our thoughts are with the entire De Jong family at this time.

About Whitworth University:

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. Engagement, the program is designed to strengthen the preaching skills of
ministry leaders by supporting and resourcing them to experiment with and
cultivate new models of proclamation that can invite listeners into
transformative experiences with God.

The five-year grant, which Lilly Endowment made through its
Compelling Preaching Initiative, will support the creation of preacher learning
cohorts, an online resource hub, yearly in-person retreats and conferences, and
academic research. In each context, the program aims to promote innovative and
participatory models of preaching while providing resources to help preachers
attend to their own spiritual health and formation. Funding from the grant will
also support a research project aimed at understanding the unique needs and
preferences of college-aged adults to learn what captures their attention and
leads them to deep engagement with Scripture.

“At the core of the program is the desire to draw experienced
and new preachers into community to not only spur each other on in the weekly
work of preaching, but to grow together spiritually as well,” Director of
Church Engagement Mindy Smith says. “At a time in our culture when so many
pastors are isolated and discouraged, I believe we need each other now more
than ever.”

The program will kick off this spring with the first
learning cohort, a six-week opportunity to gather with other preachers for
learning, experimentation and mutual support. Additional cohorts will begin regularly
over the five-year grant period. Interested preachers can learn more and sign
up on the program website here.
Preachers are also invited to consider joining the inaugural preachers retreat,
to be hosted June 24-27 at Ingalls Creek Enrichment Center in Leavenworth,
Wash. The retreat will feature workshops, spiritual direction and personal work
time. More information can be found here.

Whitworth University is one of 81 organizations receiving
grants through this competitive round of the Compelling Preaching Initiative. Lilly
Endowment launched the Compelling Preaching Initiative in 2022 because of its
interest in supporting projects that help to nurture the religious lives of
individuals and families and foster the growth and vitality of Christian
congregations in the United States.

“Throughout history, preachers often have needed to adapt
their preaching practices to engage new generations of hearers more
effectively,” said Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for
religion. “We are pleased that the organizations receiving grants in this
initiative will help pastors and others in ministry engage in the kinds of
preaching needed today to ensure that the gospel message is heard and
accessible for all audiences.”

About Lilly Endowment Inc.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is a private foundation created in 1937
by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their
pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. While those gifts remain the
financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company,
with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the
founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development,
education and religion and maintains a special commitment to its hometown,
Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana.

His publications range from studies in the New Testament and early Judaism to a number of influential essays and books on Christianity and ecology including Let Creation Rejoice (IVP) and Creation Care: A Biblical Theology of the Natural World (Zondervan). He currently sits on the board of A Rocha USA, a national community of Christians working in biodiversity conservation to protect and restore vulnerable habitats and species.

An internationally sought-after speaker, Moo is also a popular teacher and mentor of students at Whitworth. He has received the university’s Innovative Teaching Award and been named a Most Influential Professor in three of the last six years. Alumni often cite his Jan Term course at Tall Timber Ranch as their favorite memory of Whitworth, and he and his wife, Stacey Moo, an art historian, lead a popular study program in Greece every other year.

Moo’s current writing projects include a commentary (Zondervan) and theology (Cambridge University Press) of the book of Revelation.

“An internationally renowned theologian, Jonathan works on the important intersection of theology and ecology,” says Gregor Thuswaldner, provost & executive vice president. “The appointment to the Bruner-Welch Chair will enable Jonathan to devote more time to focus on biblical reflection, Christian ecological ethos and moral action in response to urgent environmental challenges. Undoubtedly, the church and the environment will greatly benefit from his contributions.”

The Bruner-Welch Chair was established in 2006 and named in honor of Dale Bruner, one of Whitworth’s most influential and popular theology professors. It is also named for the late William J. Welch, a longtime elder in the Presbyterian Church, and his former wife, Peggy Layman Welch.

Moo says, “I am awed and humbled by this appointment and thrilled by the fresh opportunities it opens up for me to serve the church and academy and to advance Whitworth’s Christ-centered mission. I cannot imagine a better community than the one we have here at Whitworth in which to study Scripture and theology and wrestle with the most pressing questions of our time. The resources provided by the Bruner-Welch Chair enable us to deepen and broaden this work, and I can’t wait to get going!”

James Edwards ’67, a nationally recognized theologian, was the first to hold the title followed by Adam Neder, who was named to the chair in 2015. The Bruner-Welch Endowed Chair in Theology was created to enable the department to preserve and strengthen its commitment to teaching and mentoring students while also providing resources to support theological scholarship, travel and service to the church.

About Whitworth University:

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
