University to celebrate with series of events exploring "Community of Courage" theme

Whitworth University will inaugurate its 18th president, Beck A. Taylor, on Friday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. in the Fieldhouse on Whitworth's campus. Members of the Spokane community are invited to join in the inaugural celebration with Whitworth trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, local and state leaders, and delegates from educational institutions across the country, including 10 college and university presidents.

Whitworth Theatre to stage "Once Upon a Mattress" musical Oct. 15-23

This October, Whitworth Theatre will present its fall production, "Once Upon a Mattress." Performances will be Oct. 15, 16, 22, and 23 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 17 at 2 p.m., in Cowles Memorial Auditorium on Whitworth's campus. General admission is $8; students and senior citizens (62 and up) pay $6. Whitworth professor of history invited to give closing lecture Sept. 26 at international symposium

Anthony E. Clark, assistant professor of East Asian history at Whitworth, will deliver the closing lecture on Sept. 26 at an international symposium, Legacies of the Book: Early Missionary Printing in Asia and the Americas, hosted by the University of San Francisco. Clark's lecture is titled Conversion by the Book: Giulio Aleni, S.J., and Jesuit Print Culture in Late-Imperial China.

The free app, called iWhitworthU, offers easy, instant access to the university by helping users navigate the campus, connect with faculty and staff, and stay up-to-date on campus news and events.

Senior Spanish-peace studies double major interns for nonprofit in Peru

Attorney who works with Muslim women lawyers to present Sept. 23 lecture as part of Whitworth's Homecoming celebration

Whitworth University will kick off Homecoming 2010 with a lecture by Barbara Standal, a 1969 alumna who will share lessons from her four-decade-long career as a trial attorney, most recently working with disenfranchised women in Central Asia and mentoring Azerbaijani women lawyers. Standal's lecture, "Chapters and Choices: Reflections on a Road Less Traveled," will take place on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m., in Room 111 of Weyerhaeuser Hall at Whitworth University. Criminal defense lawyer to present lectures Sept. 16 & 17 in honor of Constitution Day

In celebration of Constitution Day 2010, Whitworth will feature two lectures by Scott McKay, a Whitworth alum and criminal defense lawyer. McKay will discuss his experiences defending terrorism suspects following Sept. 11, 2001, and the importance of protecting civil liberties even in times of perceived crisis during his lecture, "Defending the Rule of Law in a Time of Terror," on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall at Whitworth University. McKay will discuss his vocation as an attorney and will offer insights about the future of individual rights in the nation's courts on Sept. 17, at 10:25 a.m. in the Seeley G. Mudd Chapel.
