Eugene Peterson, author of popular Bible translation, The Message, to speak at baccalaureate
Deborah Wilds, president of the College Success Foundation, which provides college scholarships, mentoring and support to low-income students and students of color, will address graduates at Whitworth University's 121st undergraduate commencement ceremony May 15. President Beck A. Taylor will be the speaker at the graduate commencement ceremony May 14.

Anna Schowengerdt, a 1993 Whitworth alumna who has worked with Catholic Relief Services for more than a decade, will present "Humanitarian Aid: A Practitioner's Perspective," on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall at Whitworth University. Admission is free. The presentation will be the fifth and final lecture in Whitworth's 54th annual Great Decisions Lecture Series, which features five speakers who focus on current political, cultural and economic subjects of interest to the international community. Whitworth University trustees on Friday unanimously approved a bold 10-year vision for the institution and a strategic plan to achieve that vision. The Whitworth 2021: Courage at the Crossroads vision and strategic plan call for the university to pursue its historic mission to provide an education of mind and heart and also respond with courage to internal and external forces that offer unprecedented challenges and opportunities.

At its April 6 meeting, the Thrive by Five Washington Board of Directors elected Whitworth University President Beck A. Taylor to its board. Taylor, who has conducted extensive research in early childhood development and is deeply committed to ensuring school readiness among the state's children, will be a key member of Thrive by Five Washington, the state's nonprofit public-private partnership for early learning.

Autism expert Betty Fry Williams to present April 20 lecture on autism treatment
Though both autism and Asperger syndrome were identified more than 50 years ago, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) continue to confound researchers, doctors and families alike. With as many as one child out of 100 in the U.S. now diagnosed with ASD, increasing numbers of people are experiencing the confusing and often painful challenges created by ASD’s social, sensory, and communication disorders. In honor of Autism Awareness Month this April, Whitworth University will host a lecture on April 20 by Betty Fry Williams, Whitworth's Lindaman Chair and coordinator for special education, as well as an art exhibit, "Faces of Hope," which runs through April 21.
