According to the study conducted by 2008 Whitworth alum David Howell at the University of Oregon, a person suffering from a concussion may have limited cognitive deficits for up to two months following the incident. Through his research, Howell questions the conventional recovery period for concussion. He provides evidence that the conventional period of seven to 10 days may not allow for a full recovery.

Whitworth is honored to host award-winning historian, author and professor Lewis Baldwin as the 2013 Simpson-Duvall lecturer. The topic of his lecture will be “The Spirituality of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement: An Enduring Legacy.” Admission is free. Baldwin will present Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theater in Weyerhaeuser Hall.

Whitworth professor’s article on sibling relationships named Article of the Year

Last November, an article by Whitworth Associate Professor of Communication Studies Alan Mikkelson, '00, was chosen as Journal of Family Communication’s Article of the Year. The article, “Different Solicitudes of Social Support in Different Types of Adult Sibling Relationships,” overcame the journal’s rejection rate of more than 90 percent to be published in the journal’s volume 11 issue four last fall.

Whitworth robotics course provides students with valuable experience

Last semester, the Whitworth physics department began offering a course that specializes in designing and constructing robots. The course, EN/CS 396: Special Topic: Robotics, teaches students advantageous electronic and engineering skills, as well as how to overcome obstacles and adapt to the use of new technology.

Lawrence Pintak, who has been called the foremost chronicler of the interaction between Arab and Western media, will give the first lecture of Whitworth University’s 56th annual Great Decisions Lecture Series. Pintak is a former Middle East correspondent for CBS News and the founding dean of Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow School of Communication, one of the most highly regarded programs in the country. His lecture, “The U.S. and the Muslim World,” will take place Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Whitworth’s Weyerhaeuser Hall. Whitworth students and faculty explore Tanzania in semester-long study-abroad program

During last year’s January and spring terms, Whitworth offered its first semester-long study program to Tanzania. The 20-week program was co-led by John Yoder, Whitworth professor of political science, and his wife, Janet Yoder. Twelve students were immersed in the language and culture of Tanzania during the inaugural trip.

Whitworth School of Education receives national Model of Excellence Award

Whitworth University’s School of Education was selected as the winner of the 2013 Model of Excellence Award by the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education. Whitworth submitted an application for the award in the category of Global Awareness and Action, which encompasses global education, intercultural education and diversity.

Each February, Whitworth commemorates its founding, on Feb. 20, 1890, with a month-long celebration. Heritage Month 2013 will kick off Thursday, Feb. 7, with the Founder’s Day Convocation, when students, faculty and staff gather to bring Whitworth’s history to life and dedicate themselves to building upon that legacy in the coming year. Heritage Month 2013 will focus on Whitworth and the African-American cultural experience during Black History Month.

Whitworth named No. 1 school in Pacific Northwest for study-abroad participation

The Institute of International Education has named Whitworth University the No. 1 master’s-level university for study-abroad participation in the Pacific Northwest. Among the 585 members of Whitworth’s Class of 2012, 45.2 percent studied abroad, while about 14 percent of U.S. undergraduate students receiving bachelor’s degrees in 2012 studied abroad during their college careers.
