As a Christian physician, Jim Shaw seeks to treat patients’ minds, hearts and bodies. Shaw will discuss how his faith and profession intersect in beneficial and challenging ways on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m., in Weyerhaeuser Hall’s Robinson Teaching Theatre. Shaw is also the recipient of Whitworth’s 2014 Distinguished Community Service Award, which he will receive during his Oct. 29 talk. The lecture is free and open to the public, and the Spokane community is invited to share in the celebration of Shaw’s award.

Whitworth’s Distinguished Community Service Award honors individuals who have exhibited outstanding achievements in meeting the needs of residents of the Spokane area. As the former medical director for the Providence Center for Faith and Healing, Shaw created an interdisciplinary approach to care for patients holistically. He brought social workers and chaplains alongside physicians and nurses to tend to patients’ emotional, social, spiritual and medical needs.

In 2007, Shaw founded the palliative care program at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, in Spokane. In 2010, he was one of five physicians to be honored with the Cambia Health Foundation’s Sojourns Award.

“Jim’s diligence, humility and heart of a servant leader have helped him incrementally transform the face of healthcare in the Inland Northwest,” Dale Hammond, Whitworth director of alumni and parent relations, says. “Without his focus on caring for the whole patient – spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically – palliative care in Spokane would be years behind where it currently stands.”

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of 3,000 students, offers 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
