Whitworth Forensics dominates 28 schools in Western Washington tournament

The Whitworth University forensics team earned another historic victory at the Western Washington University Speech and Debate Tournament in Bellingham earlier this month. Whitworth took first place among 29 higher education institutions from six states, and took home 51 trophies and three sweepstakes awards. Whitworth defeated teams from schools including the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University and Utah State University.

Whitworth also took first place in the yearlong sweepstakes among 38 public and private colleges and universities competing in the Northwest Forensics Conference, marking the first time that Whitworth has won the overall Northwest Conference award. And Whitworth Forensics won another tournament Feb. 8 at Oregon State University, taking first place among eight participating institutions.

At the recent Western Washington tournament, in the senior debate division, Alex Hoffman, ’16, took first place and went undefeated throughout the tournament. Rebecca Korf, ’15, took second place; Sam Director, ’15, and Chris Burnett, ’16, finished in the top four; and Lilly Davis, ’16, Liz Jacobs, ’17, and Brennan Neal, ’16, finished in the top eight. Each of these students except Jacobs received speaker awards, as well as Stephanie Saracco, ’15, who finished in ninth place.

In the junior debate division, Hanna Tweet, ’16, took first place, followed by Phillip Allevato, ’18, who took second, and Andie Ingram, who finished in the top four. Tweet, Ingram and Allevato were also given speaker awards. Kat Durate, ’17, took first place in the novice debate division.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
