Whitworth University celebrates grand opening of $13.5 million Cowles Music Center
October 3, 2016
On Oct. 8, Whitworth University President Beck A. Taylor will host a grand opening celebration for the university's new $13.5 million Cowles Music Center. The ceremony will feature student performances, a word from key campus leaders, and interactive self-guided tours of the renovated and significantly expanded facility, which more than doubles the previous space available for music education.
The music center addition comprises 21,481 square feet of new lobby space, teaching studios, student practice rooms, and two large rehearsal rooms: one that accommodates choral rehearsals and one for instrumental rehearsals. In the existing buildings, 15,625 square feet of space was remodeled. Seventeen new pianos, worth more than $400,000, were added to practice rooms and teaching studios as well.
The grand opening celebration will be open to the public and will take place at 11 a.m. at the front entrance of the Cowles Music Center. It will conclude with an opportunity to tour the landmark facility.
The project’s total cost is $13.5 million, with every dollar provided by generous donors. In October 2014, The Harriet Cheney Cowles Foundation pledged $2 million and Whitworth Trustee Walt Oliver and his wife, Kay, pledged a gift of $3.75 million to support completion of the new music center. The center is a major initiative of The Campaign For Whitworth, which includes fund-raising initiatives laid out in its campaign plan, such as adding to the university’s endowment, supporting Whitworth’s Core curriculum and honors program, and more.
Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
