Whitworth Wind Symphony to Present Spring Concert Tour March 20-27

The acclaimed Whitworth Wind Symphony will perform in venues throughout Oregon and Washington March 21-28 during its spring 2018 concert tour.


The group tours the Western United States every other year creating unique concert experiences for students, community members, and educators across the Northwest.

During the 2018 tour, the Wind Symphony, conducted by director Richard Strauch, will perform traditional works for band by Ron Nelson, Joseph Turrin, Percy Grainger, and John Philip Sousa, as well as new works for symphonic winds, including Peter Van Zandt Lane’s "Hivemind" and Colorado composer James David’s "Ghosts of the Old Year."

The Wind Symphony kicks off its tour with a joint concert at North Idaho College with the North Idaho College Wind Symphony, under the direction of Bryan Hannaford, on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Schuler Performing Arts Center at Boswell Hall. This is the first time NIC and Whitworth University have presented a concert together.

The Whitworth Wind Symphony is one of the outstanding college bands in the
northwestern United States. Since 1999, the ensemble has appeared in concert at
numerous music conferences, including those of the Washington Music Educators
Association, the Northwest Division of the National Association for Music Education,
and the Western/Northwestern region of the College Band Directors National
Association.

The wind symphony has also toured throughout the western United
States and in Hawaii, Costa Rica and Thailand. The wind symphony has released five
compact disc recordings, and can also be heard on the wind symphony’s
YouTube channel  The wind symphony is open by audition to all Whitworth students in any major who are woodwind, brass, percussion or string bass performers

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college enrolls 2,700 students in more than 55 undergraduate and graduate programs.
