The Rev. Mindy Smith to Serve as Associate Director in the Office of Church Engagement
October 9, 2018
Whitworth University is pleased to announce the Rev. Mindy Smith, D.Min., as the new associate director in the Whitworth Office of Church Engagement (OCE) .
Smith graduated from Whitworth in 1998. She was a theology major and was actively involved in Young Life during her time at the university. She served on the Young Life staff in Spokane following her graduation.
Smith earned her master of divinity in 2006 from Princeton Theological Seminary. Two years later she received a call to serve as campus pastor at Whitworth. For the past 10 years Smith has developed ministry programs at the university, taught classes on pastoral care and ministry training, and preached regularly during weekly community chapel.
Smith recently graduated with a doctor of ministry from Portland Seminary and became the associate director in the OCE in June. Her new role will include serving as the director of the Whitworth Ministry Summit (July 24-27, 2019) and focusing on the ongoing development of the Office of Church Engagement’s Learning Communities. These are distinct groups within the OCE’s network of partner churches that are committed to growing and learning in a specific area. These communities include worship, intergenerational youth ministry, hospitality with refugees and immigrants, reconciliation, church-planting, creation care and preaching.
“Mindy’s extensive experience in parachurch, church and campus ministry settings is a wellspring of wisdom concerning how to do ministry during this time of immense cultural change,” says Terry McGonigal, director of the OCE. “Mindy’s expertise in preaching is especially important as she guides others in development of reflective and effective ways to communicate the Gospel. The Office of Church Engagement is fortunate to have Mindy’s experience, expertise and skill guiding our efforts ‘to equip disciples and engage culture with the Good News of Jesus."
Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
