Whitworth’s “Balance Your Bucs” Program Wins National Award
July 28, 2020
Whitworth’s School of Business is proud to announce its personal finance education program, Balance Your Bucs, has received the Diamond Award from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
The Balance Your Bucs program is led by students seeking to educate other students in areas of personal finance to provide a foundation for a lifetime of financial well-being. Balance Your Bucs’ vision is to use research, teaching and service to encourage students to lead well-balanced financial lives. The program is sponsored by STCU.
The students host fun and engaging workshops throughout the year on topics such as budgeting, fraud and identity theft, saving and investing, and debt and credit. When the group was founded in 2016, it hosted six workshops during the school year. Today, Balance Your Bucs hosts 14 workshops a year, a financial wellness week, a budgeting simulation and a trivia game.
School of Business Assistant Dean Robin Henager developed the program and says many students realize they have a lot to learn about money management and are interested in the topics.
“The program is rewarding for everyone involved, including our student coordinators who run the program, our student advisors who lead the workshops, our attendees, our sponsor representatives, and myself as I watch the positive impact of the program on our students’ lives,” Henager says.
STCU’s partnership has allowed for several scholarships to be awarded to Whitworth students and for the group to offer free coffee cards to students who take a ride to class on the Cash Cart and answer a financial literacy question correctly.
STCU nominated Whitworth for the award and calls Balance Your Bucs a unique peer-to-peer financial education model that keeps students in the center.
“It has been a very rewarding experience to work with Whitworth University to bring the Balance Your Bucs program to campus,” says Keith Appleton, STCU community officer II. “STCU is a credit union founded by teachers, and education remains a core value. Supporting financial education in new and creative ways sets Balance Your Bucs apart, in a dynamic peer-to-peer learning model.”
The Diamond Awards is the most prestigious annual credit union industry competition and recognizes the creative excellence and outstanding results of financial programs.
