Whitworth University’s Jazz Orchestra Welcomes Multi-Grammy Award Winner Billy Childs on Nov. 1

The Whitworth Jazz Orchestra Guest Artist Concert featuring pianist and composer Billy Childs will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium. 

Child’s will make his Spokane debut joining Whitworth’s award-winning jazz orchestra under the direction of Jared Hall ’08, assistant professor of music. 

Childs is a Yamaha Performing Artist and multi-Grammy award-winning pianist and composer. His Grammy wins and nominations include: 

Best Instrumental Composition for Into the Light (2006)

Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for New York Tendaberry (2015, featuring Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma)

Best Jazz Instrumental Album nomination for Rebirth (2017)

“We are beyond thrilled and deeply fortunate to have our ensemble showcase Child’s extraordinary musicianship, both through his masterful playing and his inspired compositions at this year’s annual Guest Artist Jazz Concert,” Hall says. “His remarkable artistry, both as a performer and a composer, brings a depth and energy that will truly elevate the entire ensemble.”

There will also be a free master class on Oct. 31 in the Cowles Music Center’s recital hall. Childs will share his wisdom and experiences during this master class at 5:15 p.m.
