Fall Convocation 2026: Welcoming Our Students and Celebrating Walter Oliver’s Lifetime of Leadership, Faith and Service
President Scott McQuilkin and President Emeriti Bill Robinson will present the George F. Whitworth Medal to trustee Walter Oliver ’67. This medal is the highest honor the board of trustees can bestow.
For more than six decades, Oliver has embodied the faith, wisdom and servant leadership that define the Whitworth community. As a student, he was a musician, athlete and chair of the Human Relations Council, demonstrating early the character and leadership that would shape his life and career. After earning a master's degree in human resources, Oliver rose to senior executive positions at leading corporations, including Johnson Controls and General Dynamics, one of the world's foremost aerospace and defense companies. As senior vice president for human resources and administration at General Dynamics, he earned a reputation as one of the country's most respected human resources leaders.
“Few people have shaped Whitworth as profoundly and faithfully as Walter Oliver,” McQuilkin says. “His greatly esteemed leadership during critical seasons of change was marked by humility, thoughtful discernment and deep trust in God’s guidance. As board chair from 2008 to 2014, he helped lead the university through a presidential transition, long-range strategic planning and its evolution to university status. But what stands out most is the way he cared for people and truly strengthened our community.”
In recognition of his faithful service and enduring commitment to Whitworth, Oliver Hall was renamed in his honor in 2015, and the Whitworth Athletics Leadership Team Center (WALT) was dedicated in his name in 2020. Together, these landmarks reflect a legacy of leadership, generosity and community that continues to shape the university.
The ceremony will continue with President McQuilkin’s convocation address, “The Real World Now,” and a Scripture reading by Vernon Glass ’27, the new president of the Associated Students of Whitworth University.
