Whitworth’s “Spelling Bee” Musical Puts Audience Volunteers Center Stage
The Tony Award-winning comedy was written by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin and centers on a fictional spelling bee and six adolescents who vie for the championship. The show explores themes of fair play, the quest for success and friendship and features popular songs like My Friend the Dictionary, I Speak Six Languages and Pandemonium.
One fun and unusual aspect of the show is the inclusion of four real audience members who are invited onstage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the fictional contestants, lending an improvisational element to the play.
Whitworth’s production is directed by Elise Forier Edie, with musical direction by Scott Miller. It performs in Cowles Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17, 23, and 24 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 18 and 25. Tickets prices range from $5-20.
