Whitworth to host National Book Award winner Timothy Egan April 13

Renowned journalist and author Timothy Egan will share Dust Bowl survivors' stories based on his writings and interviews Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. in Weyerhaeuser Hall’s Robinson Teaching Theatre at Whitworth University. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the North Spokane Friends of the Library, Whitworth University, and Humanities Washington.

Whitworth Hawaiian Club presents its 44th annual lu’au, April 12

The Whitworth Hawaiian Club, Na Pu’uwai o Hawai’i (The Heart of Hawai’i), will share food and culture with the Whitworth and Spokane communities during the club’s 44th annual lu’au, on Saturday, April 12. The doors will open and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the Hixson Union Building, and entertainment will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium.

Retired Army Brigadier General and Whitworth Adjunct Professor of Global Strategies Neal Sealock will present “Dealing with the Dragon: China’s Foreign Policy” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Whitworth forensics team takes first place at national tournament

The Whitworth University forensics team took first place at the National Christian College Forensics Association (NCFFA) National Tournament for the second year in a row. The tournament was hosted by California Baptist University March 8-10, and featured 28 Christian higher education institutions from 15 states. Whitworth took second in the speech sweepstakes, third in the debate sweepstakes, but first in the overall sweepstakes, ahead of schools including Azusa Pacific University, Biola University, Colorado Christian University, Dordt College, Liberty University and Wheaton College.

Whitworth professor receives grant to further his study of sleep

Michael Rempe, Whitworth assistant professor of math and computer science, recently received a $60,886 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant will be used toward Rempe’s collaborative project with Jonathan Wisor, an associate professor at Washington State University. Their project focuses on the effects of chronic methamphetamine use upon sleep.

Whitworth Professor of Theatre Diana Trotter stars in Lake City Playhouse’s Wit, by Margaret Edson, which runs through March 9 at the Lake City Playhouse, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In “Review: Trotter as Bearing Lifts Lake City’s ‘Wit,’” The Spokesman-Review commends Trotter’s performance and her embodiment of the central character, Vivian Bearing, a professor of 17th-century poetry. Barbara Sanders appointed dean of Whitworth School of Education

Whitworth Provost Caroline Simon announced March 3 the appointment of Barbara Sanders, Ed.D, as dean of Whitworth’s School of Education. Sanders brings to the position her deep expertise in educational research and her 18 years as a Whitworth faculty member; she has served as interim dean of the School of Education since February 2013. Sanders began work in her new role immediately.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine has ranked Whitworth University the 10th Best College Value among private universities in the West and Southwestern U.S. for 2014. Nationally, Whitworth is ranked 44th.

Whitworth University will host the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s third Conversation on Unity with Difference March 12-14 in the Seeley Mudd Chapel. The three-day event, organized and led by PC(USA) Moderator Neal Presa, will feature seven presentations on topics related to race, gender and religious identities.

Author Jerry Pallotta to lead the 30th annual Whitworth Writing Rally, March 15

The Whitworth Writing Rally, a family literacy initiative for students in pre-school through sixth grade, will celebrate its 30th anniversary by welcoming to campus author Jerry Pallotta. The rally will take place Saturday, March 15, with sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., in Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus. As many as 400 students from the Inland Northwest are expected to participate this year.
