The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities Reaffirms Whitworth University’s Accreditation
August 6, 2018
The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has reaffirmed the accreditation of Whitworth University.
The NWCCU is an independent, nonprofit membership organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the regional authority on educational quality and institutional effectiveness of higher education institutions within its jurisdiction.
In its letter detailing its Spring 2018 evaluation, the commission commended Whitworth on its “strong and uniform sense of mission and its clear, effective articulation of the transformative mind and heart academic experience.”
“We are extremely pleased with the results from this comprehensive accreditation effort,” said President Beck A. Taylor. “All of Whitworth’s faculty, staff and students are to be congratulated for contributing to a learning community that excels in so many areas in today’s demanding educational landscape.”
Whitworth has been accredited with NWCCU since 1933, but this was the university’s first full seven-year evaluation by NWCCU since the standards for accreditation changed significantly in 2010. The new standards place more emphasis on effective, regular and comprehensive assessment of student achievement.
The commission also recognized what it called “the thoughtful, collaborative and productive work of faculty and staff through the shared governance structure of the University.” It stated Whitworth sets a very high standard for community engagement on mission, planning and sustainability. The next full comprehensive evaluation will take place in spring 2025.
Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
