Whitworth Professor Named YWCA Women of Achievement Award Winner
August 16, 2018
Whitworth University is proud to announce Lisa Laurier, department chair of the Teacher Education Program and professor of education, has received the YWCA’s 2018 Women of Achievement Education Award.
During her 15 years at Whitworth, Laurier has developed and initiated a partnership between Whitworth University and the Mead School District.
Due to significant improvement in elementary reading scores, Laurier has taken her work into two additional schools. Her desire is to see all Title 1 schools provided the same opportunities and benefits experienced by Mead’s non-Title 1 schools.
“I am very privileged to have been welcomed into schools and community businesses to provide literacy learning opportunities for teachers, parents and children,” said Laurier. “I believe literacy is the gateway to personal and professional success and I believe that every child deserves to become an avid, skilled and passionate reader and writer and every teacher and parent deserves to be equipped with the tools and resources to support the children in their lives. To be able to provide a small measure of the support needed for that to happen is a privilege and a blessing.”
Laurier currently serves as consultant for the literacy initiatives for the Innovia Foundation (previously the Inland Northwest Community Foundation) and for the Common Core Writing and Reading Evaluation initiatives for the Mead School District. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Mead School District Truancy Board as well as being the university liaison to the Inland Northwest Council for Reading Development.
Laurier and the other nine YWCA Women of Achievement award winners will be honored at a luncheon Thursday, October 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Davenport Grand in Spokane. For a complete list of winners, click here.
The YWCA Spokane has celebrated the area’s most successful women at its annual luncheon for the past 36 years. The event increases awareness and appreciation of the diverse contributions of women leaders in the community.
Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
