Whitworth University Makes Forbes’ America’s Top Colleges List for 2019

August 19, 2019
Whitworth University has once again been named one of the nation's top colleges/universities by Forbes magazine. The 2019 America’s Top Colleges list features the country’s 650 institutions that deliver the “top academics, best experiences, career success and lowest debt.”

Whitworth came in at No. 65 in the "Best in the West" category.

“We include just 15 percent of the 4,300 degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the U.S., so appearing here at all is an indication that a school meets a high standard,” Forbes editors note.

According to Forbes’ methodology, the Top Colleges ranking – now in its 12th year – has always focused on the direct benefits a college or university provides its students. The rankings are based on six general categories:

  • Alumni Salary (20%), a combination of early and midcareer salaries as reported by the federal  College Scorecard and PayScale data and research;
  • Student Satisfaction (20%), which includes results from Niche surveys on professor quality and data, and freshman retention rates from the federal IPEDS website;
  • Debt (20%), which rewards schools for low student debt loads and default rates;
  • American Leaders (15%), which is based on Forbes’ database of successful people;
  • On-Time Graduation Rate (12.5%), which accounts for both four- and six-year rates; and
  • Academic Success (12.5%), which rewards schools whose alumni win prestigious scholarships  and fellowships or have earned Ph.D.s.
Whitworth’s inclusion on this list comes just days after being named to Kiplinger’s “Best College Value” list and being named one of the “Best Universities in the West” by The Princeton Review.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
