Whitworth Presents Distinguished Leader Award to Camp Spalding Executive Director Andy Sonneland
January 22, 2020
Whitworth University will present the Distinguished Leader Award, on behalf of its board of trustees, to Camp Spalding’s Andy Sonneland on Jan. 30.
Sonneland has been the executive director of Camp Spalding, which serves a broad Christian community, since 1990. Under his leadership, Camp Spalding’s youth attendance has increased from 600 campers per year to more than 1,600. There’s also been a large expansion of the camp’s facilities, including the addition of Clearwater Lodge, which houses year-round adult programming.
“Andy Sonneland is an incredible example of faithful servant-leadership,” says Whitworth President Beck A. Taylor. “I applaud Whitworth’s board for wanting to highlight his story for our university community. Andy and his wife, Krisi, are Whitworthians through and through, and I’m pleased to celebrate Andy’s contributions in this meaningful way.”
Sonneland has spent much of his life at the Davis Lake destination, first as a camper, then counselor, and eventually as a full-time employee.
“It has been a huge blessing that my job is also my life’s calling,” Sonneland says. “Leading Camp Spalding has been a perfect fit with the abilities God gave me, and a never-ending source of joy and deep satisfaction to see Jesus draw so many campers to himself, summer after summer.”
Camp Spalding and Whitworth have kindred missions. Not only do many campers eventually become Whitworth students, but many students have ended up becoming counselors at the camp.
“Both Andy and his wife, Krisi, continue to be enthusiastic ambassadors for the university,” says Scott McQuilkin, Whitworth’s vice president for institutional advancement. “On his 30th anniversary, the timing is appropriate and the honor is a very deserving one.”
President Taylor will present Sonneland with the award at the university’s Spring Convocation on Jan. 30, 2020.
