Whitworth Pirates Post Best DIII Winning Percentage of Decade

May 26, 2020
The Spokane County Board of Commissioners Tuesday recognized the extraordinary accomplishments of the Pirates men's basketball team this season.

The Pirates had an impressive season with a record of 23-6, earning the title of co-champions of the Northwest Conference.

The team proudly represented the Spokane region at the national level in the NCAA Division III tournament on March 6-7, 2020, in Richardson, Texas, claiming victories over LeTourneau University and the University of Texas at Dallas before the tournament was canceled.

Head coach Damion Jablonski was selected as the NCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com.

With their victories in March, the Pirates earned the title of the winningest program of the decade in NCAA Division III men's basketball by winning percentage (2010-11 through 2019-20 seasons).

“This team, led by Coach J, demonstrated an incredible amount of character and resilience, overcoming obstacles in continuing the tradition of success of Whitworth Pirates men's basketball,” Whitworth Athletics Director Tim Demant says. “I am so proud of what this team accomplished this year and more importantly how they went about doing it. Their work ethic, commitment to each other and the way they represented our university was first class.”

The Pirates posted a record of 245-43 for a winning percentage of .851. In addition, Whitworth’s winning percentage ranks fourth among the top schools in all of NCAA basketball, behind West Liberty (Div. II - .895), Lincoln Memorial (Div. II - .874) and Gonzaga (Div. I - .858).

Two of the winningest men's basketball teams in the nation are located within 6 miles of each other.

The Pirates’ record over the last decade includes:

  • Nine NCAA Division III tournament appearances
  • One Elite 8 and four Sweet 16 appearances
  • Seven regular season Northwest Conference titles
  • Seven Northwest Conference tournament championships
  • Six Northwest Conference Players of the Year
  • Five Division III All-Americans (either NABC or D3hoops.com), including the 2011 NCAA Division III Player of the Year (Michael Taylor)
  • Ten All-West Region honorees
  • A home record of 131-16 (.891)
