Theologian, Ethicist and Author Jonathan Tran to Speak at Whitworth University Feb. 8

February 2, 2023

Whitworth’s Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith & Learning will kick off its spring speaker series with a presentation by Jonathan Tran, Ph.D., on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Weyerhaeuser Hall’s Robinson Teaching Theatre. Tran will speak on “Identity Politics and Anti-Racism: What’s Christian about It?”

Tran is an associate professor of theology and ethics at Baylor University, where he holds the George W. Baines Chair in Religion and was recently named the associate dean for faculty in the Honors College.

Tran’s research and teaching focus is on the theological, ethical and political implications of the human life in language, with specific attention on Christian theology and ordinary language philosophy.

His most recent book, Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism, examines racism from the perspective of political economy, investigating how race ideology gets structurally and systemically conventionalized and how religious communities contend with and proclaim alternatives to racial capitalism. Earlier books include The Vietnam War and Theologies of Memory and Foucault and Theology.

Tran serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Religious Ethics and Christian Century. He also co-edits (with Alda Balthrop-Lewis) the “Reflection and Theory in the Study of Religion” book series by Oxford University Press/American Academy of Religion.

This event is free and open to the public. The Weyerhaeuser Center invites the public to attend all the presentations in its spring speaker series, including:

March 9:  John Inazu, distinguished professor of law and religion at Washington University

April 18: Elizabeth Bruenig, journalist for The Atlantic and Pulitzer Prize finalist
