Julie Levi Elected Chair of Whitworth Board of Trustees

November 4, 2024

The Whitworth University Board of Trustees has elected Julie L. Levi, J.D., to be its next chair, succeeding Brian Kirkpatrick, who has served as chair since 2020. She will begin her three-year term as chair of the board on July 1, 2025.

“I am immensely pleased to welcome Julie as the next chair of the board of trustees,” Whitworth President Scott McQuilkin says. “She has a passion for Christian higher education and a great love for Whitworth, our students and our mission. The entire board is excited for Julie’s leadership in helping to guide this special place in the years ahead.”

“I am thrilled that Julie Levi will become the next chair of Whitworth's board of trustees,” Kirkpatrick says. “In her years serving on the board, Julie has proven to be a well-respected leader with a deep commitment to Whitworth and its mission. As a Whitworth parent and board member, Julie knows the importance of fostering all that goes into equipping students with an outstanding Whitworth education. I'm so grateful for her leadership, exhibited through a wonderful combination of wisdom, insight, humility, faith, and an ability to work with many different people and views. We are blessed to have Julie ready to soon step into the role of chair."

Levi joined the Whitworth board in 2020. She is an attorney who practiced complex litigation in Minnesota before moving to California. Levi received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from Carleton College in 1986 and her juris doctor from Hamline University in 1991. She was admitted to the Minnesota State Bar Association in 1991.

Levi and her husband, Mark Gergen, live in San Diego and have two children, both Whitworth alumni. The couple’s oldest daughter, Kathleen Levi ’18, double majored in mathematics and computer science, and is a software developer for a digital health startup company in San Diego. Megan Levi ’21 majored in theatre and minored in theology. She works for Christian Youth Theater (CYT), a national theater arts program, and is a professional photographer in San Diego.

“I am honored and humbled to be named the incoming chair of the board of trustees of Whitworth University,” Levi says. “In the decade since our eldest daughter started attending Whitworth in 2014, I have been endlessly impressed by the university and its focus on a Christ-centered education that encompasses both mind and heart. Being a part of Whitworth means being a part of something extraordinary, and I am excited by the opportunity to work with President McQuilkin, my fellow trustees, the administration and the faculty to shepherd the work, the vision and mission that God is inspiring here at Whitworth.”

Levi is an active volunteer for a number of causes, which include education and addressing the plague of human trafficking. She attends North Coast Church and is a life group leader for North Coast’s Rancho Bernardo Campus.
