Whitworth’s Office of the President Presents a Night of Music with Acclaimed Artist Fernando Ortega

March 3, 2026

Whitworth’s office of the president is honored to welcome singer-songwriter Fernando Ortega to Cowles Auditorium on Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m.

Ortega is an American Christian artist celebrated for his hymn-centered worship music.  He’s regarded as one of Christian music’s most respected composers and is known for creating arrangements of early church music and hymns infused with instrumental and vocal character drawn from classical, folk and world music.

“Hosting Fernando Ortega is a great blessing for our campus community,” Whitworth President Scott McQuilkin says. “We are grateful for the opportunity to welcome an artist whose gifts not only enrich the broader world of Christian worship but also speak deeply to our mission of inviting students to honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity. I look forward to sharing an evening of worship and music with someone whose songs have shaped the spiritual journeys of so many, including those of my own family.”

Throughout his career, Ortega has released 22 records, traveled around the world as a touring artist, and received many accolades and awards for his music. His albums, including Hymns & Meditations and The Shadow of Your Wings, have made him a distinctive voice in contemporary Christian music. His writing often reflects real human struggles that result in turning to one’s faith. Ortega, himself, describes his music as storytelling about everyday life and God’s presence within it.

Ortega received his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of New Mexico, where he discovered his passion for blending diverse musical traditions with Christian hymns.
