The Whitworth Hawaiian Club, Na Pu‘uwai o Hawai‘i (The Heart of Hawai‘i), will share food and culture with the community during the club’s 49th annual lu‘au on Friday, March 15.

Dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m. in the Hixson Union Building (HUB) dining hall. Entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

This year’s theme is Voyage through Polynesia. Visitors will experience the customs and flavors of some of the major islands of the Polynesian Triangle including Hawai‘i, Samoa and New Zealand.

The menu will feature kalua pig, barbecue chicken, chicken long rice, lomi salmon, white rice, haupia and pineapple upside down cake.

Members of Na Pu‘uwai o Hawai‘i will perform traditional dances. “This year we are traveling outside of Hawai‘i and doing dances from other cultures,” says Tynell Ornellas, Hawaiian Club co-president. “We’re bringing back the haka this year, which I know a lot of people are looking forward to seeing.”

Tickets are $22 for general admission, $12 for students, $15 for seniors (62-plus) and $12 for children (6-12). The event is free for children 5 and under.
