Whitworth University’s Democracy & Discourse Committee Presents: A Community Conversation with U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner
Whitworth University’s Democracy & Discourse Committee will host this event on Monday, March 17, at 6 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Ticketing:
Those wanting to attend must register for a ticket on Whitworth’s Democracy & Discourse website. Tickets will be available on Friday, March 14. Space is limited, and no one will be admitted without a mobile or paper ticket.
Format:
The event will be moderated by Bert Emerson, Ph.D., associate professor of English and director of the George F. Whitworth Honors Program. The event will start with a poll for attendees, asking for input on the most important issues they would like to see addressed. Prof. Emerson will engage with Congressman Baumgartner on a number of these issues, before turning to the question-and-answer portion of the event.
Anyone wanting to ask a question will be given a ticket at the door with a number on it. Numbers will be drawn at random, and attendees will be called to the microphone to ask their question. Time limitations and rules of conduct for the question period will be addressed by the moderator. For those not wishing to ask their question in public, a written option will be made available.
Security:
Whitworth security officers will be present, along with additional Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Spokane Police Department officers. We ask that civil discourse is used in accordance with Whitworth’s Statement on Freedom of Expression and Civil Discourse and that each invited guest, participating in the question-and-answer session, be allowed to ask their question and the representative be allowed to answer it.
For the safety and convenience of all attendees, we kindly ask that only CLEAR bags be brought into the event. No purses, backpacks or other bags will be allowed inside the venue. There will not be a place to store purses, so please leave them at home or in a vehicle.
No weapons, protest signs or banners will be allowed on campus. Pets are not permitted except for service animals.
Recording:
Whitworth University will record the event and post it on the university’s YouTube page after the event, so those not able to attend the meeting can watch it. By attending the event, participants are granting consent to be recorded. There will be a small, designated area out of the camera’s view where a limited number of people can sit.
Parking:
You will not need a parking pass for this event. Visitors may park in any of the marked parking lots marked “General” on campus.
