“Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” Gets a Musical Makeover by Mekenna Simpson ’27

September 30, 2025

Whitworth University Theatre is proud to present its fall main-stage production, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, in Cowles Auditorium, Oct. 10-12 and Oct. 17-19.

This classic coming-of-age story, adapted by Marsha Chamberlain and directed by Elise Forier Edie, MFA, associate professor of theatre, follows Rebecca Randall, a bright and spirited young girl whose imagination and kindness bring unexpected joy to a quiet town. With humor, charm and a lot of heart, this play is perfect for audiences of all ages.

Mekenna Simpson ’27, who has appeared on Whitworth’s stage in several past productions, has a different role this time around. She spent last summer composing and recording vocal and instrumental music for the play. She says this production offered her the chance to create some beautiful music, and she is thrilled to bring something so magical to life.

“Getting the chance to be behind the curtain and make the story come alive in a new way has offered me not only a way to pursue my passions in a new light, but it also gives me a new perspective on how theatre comes together in all aspects,” Simpson says. “I will always have a heart for performing and will continue to pursue time onstage, but writing music and getting to do it in this capacity has given me new eyes for a beautiful craft.”

Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 10, 11, 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, Oct. 12 and 19, at 2 p.m. You can purchase tickets here
