Whitworth Opens the Military & Veterans Resource Center
Whitworth has renovated the 3,000-square-foot home to include a computer lab, group study space, kitchen, game room, and relaxation space for those who may be dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries.
Whitworth now serves and supports more than 200 military-connected students and believes this center will be key in helping them to further their educations.
“We are thrilled to have taken this next step in the ways Whitworth serves our military and veteran students,” says Scott McQuilkin, Whitworth interim president. “This space, where Phil Labrie, assistant director of military & veterans outreach, also makes his office, communicates our commitment to provide these students the very best Whitworth has to offer.”
Through funds from the Storm Family Endowment, a student worker from campus ministry will have a regular presence at the MAVRC, helping to cultivate a Christ-centered pastoral and relational presence with veterans on campus.
The center will also serve as a place for outside veterans organizations to come and work with Whitworth students.
The university has been successful it its efforts to recruit veterans and military-connected students and is proud to be ranked No. 6 in the West for veterans by U.S. News & World Report. Also, for the third year in a row, Whitworth has been recognized as a military-friendly school by Viqtory Media.
Whitworth would like to thank the following members of the Spokane business community for their generous donations to the MAVRC: Great Floors, La-Z-Boy, Ashley Furniture, Casual Spaces Furniture and Allegiance Flag Supply.
More work is needed to transform and equip the center with essential resources for students and to help make the center compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you would like to donate, please click here.
